A domain is essentially the primary address of your website, for example,

Adding a Domain

Initial Steps

  1. Access Privacy Ops:

    • Navigate to the Privacy Ops dashboard.

  2. Select Cookie Consent:

    • In the Privacy Ops dashboard, click on Cookie Consent.

    • You’ll be redirected to Cookie Consent Overview page.

    • On the left sidebar, click on the second icon - Domains

  1. Add New Domain:

  • On the top right corner of the Domains page, click on Add New Domain

Step 1: Domain & Consent Type

  • In the Domain/Website URL field enter your primary domain. Example: lightbeam.ai

  • Indicate any sub-domains you wish to monitor or manage. This means, in addition to your primary domain, you can also add associated sub-domains, for instance, blog.lightbeam.ai.

  • Automatically share consent settings between the domain and its subdomains, ensuring that any consent set at either level applies to all associated domains and subdomains.

Advanced Scan Configuration (Inclusion and Exclusion List)

Customize scanning parameters to control which pages, subdomains, or paths are scanned:

  1. Inclusion List: Define specific pages or subdomains to be included in the scan.

    • Under Scope, add each subdomain URL you wish to include for scanning.

    • Only Include: Only the specified pages or subdomains in this list will be scanned.

  2. Exclusion List: Define specific pages or subdomains to be excluded from the scan.

    • Under Scope, add the subdomain URL or paths you want to exclude.

    • Exclude Following: The specified pages, subdomains, or paths will be excluded from scanning, while the rest of the domain will be scanned.

    • Use the plus (+) and minus (-) icons to add or remove URLs in both the inclusion and exclusion lists.

After you have selected the necessary parameters, click on Save & Proceed.

Scanning Process

LightBeam automatically scans and detects cookies from your website(s). During scanning, the message "Scanning in progress..." will appear. Users can close the window and return later. Upon completion, a notification and email will be dispatched.

Step 2: Cookie Categories

  • User Actions for Cookie Management:

    1. Categorizing Cookies:

The platform will automatically categorize the detected cookies. However, it’s important to note that sometimes these categorizations may not align with the user's expectations. To move a cookie to the correct category:

      • Navigate to the desired cookie.

      • Check the box adjacent to the cookie name.

      • Click on "Actions" and choose "Move" from the drop-down menu.

  • This will open a pop-up as seen in Fig.

  • Choose a Cookie Category from the drop-down, example: Essential.

  • Click on Save.

Adding a New Category

Users have the option to introduce a new category if required.

  • Click on New Category.

  • Enter details of the new cookie category such as Category Name and Category Description.

  • Click on Save.

Deleting a Category:

Categories can be removed provided no cookies are associated with them.

  • Select the cookie category to be deleted. Ensure that it does not have any cookies.

  • Click on the Delete button.

  • Click on Okay.

Export Cookie List

To export a list of cookies from a specific domain category, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Domain you want to export cookies from.

  1. Click on the Actions button. Click on Manage Domain from the drop-down.

  1. Navigate to the Cookie Category section.

  1. Click on Export Cookie List. This will automatically download the list to your device, capturing details like Session Cookie, Cross-Site Connection, Connection Type, and Category.

  1. Go to Downloads and open the file labeled "Report - Cookie Consent Scan History."

  1. The report includes key details for each cookie:

  • Name

  • Cookie Type

  • Domain

  • Expiry (if applicable)

  • HTTP Only status

  • Secure connection status

  • Session Cookie

  • Cross-Site Connection

  • Connection Type

  • Category

Step 3: Banner Style

Once banners are created, they must be assigned to domains to display on your websites. The Banner Style step in the domain configuration process allows you to associate one or more banners with a domain. At this step, you can choose between two banner assignment options: i) Global Banners ii) Location-based Banners

Display Options

For each banner (global or region-specific), you can configure what is displayed to users:

  1. Under "What to display to the user?" section:

    • Enable Show Banner to display the cookie consent banner

    • Select display mode: Banner and Preference Center both or Preference Center Only

  2. A preview of how the banner will appear to users in the selected region is shown below

2.1 Global Banner Assignment

Once a banner is created, it must be assigned to a specific domain for it to be displayed on the website.

By default, a Global(Default) region is created for all users:

  1. In the Banner Style screen, locate the Global(Default) region

  2. Click the Select Banner button under the Banner section

  1. A modal will appear showing all available banners.

  1. Click on a banner in the left panel to preview it

  1. Choose your display option:

  • Banner and Preference Center both: Shows both elements to users

  • Preference Center Only: Shows only the preference center

  1. Click Select & Proceed to assign the banner

2.2 Location-Based Banner Assignment

Configuring Location-Based Banners

Prerequisites

  • You must be in the Domain Configuration workflow, as this feature is only available when assigning banners to domains

To assign different banners for different geographic regions:

  1. Click the + Add Another Banner button

  2. In the modal that appears, select a region type:

    • Under Location(s), click the Select Region(s) dropdown

    • Predefined Regions: Select from common regulatory regions (CCPA, GDPR, etc.)

    • Custom: Create your own region definition

  3. For predefined regions:

    • The region will already have associated countries/states

    • Click Select Banner to choose a banner for this region

  4. Creating a Custom Region

    1. Select Custom from the region dropdown

    2. Provide a name for your custom region (e.g., "European Users")

    3. Click Add Countries to select countries for this region

    4. For supported countries (US, UK, Canada), you can also select specific states/provinces:

      • Click the country name

      • Select the Add States option

      • Choose specific states from the dropdown list

    5. Click Save Region when finished

    6. Click Select Banner when finished

  5. Choose an appropriate banner for the region

  6. Click Save & Proceed to confirm your selection

  1. Repeat this process for each additional region you want to configure

The Location-Based Banner Display feature allows you to configure different cookie consent banners based on user location, helping you comply with regional privacy regulations.

Key Benefits

  • Display region-specific banners tailored to local privacy laws

  • Create custom messaging for different geographic areas

  • Ensure compliance with multiple regional regulations simultaneously

Managing Region Priorities

When a user could match multiple regions, the system follows these rules:

  1. Most specific match wins (state-level match > country-level match > global)

  2. First configured region with a match is used when specificity is equal

Testing Region-Based Banners

  • Use a VPN to simulate different user locations

  • Check that the appropriate banner displays based on the detected location

  • Verify that consent choices are properly recorded for each region

Step 4: Review & Download Code

After configuring your banner style in Step 3, you will proceed to Step 4 where you implement the cookie consent banner on your website.

Reviewing Your Configuration

  1. In this step, you'll see:

    • A preview of your banner(s) / preference center(s)

    • Implementation code snippets

    • The current script version number

You will see a preview of your banner along with two code snippets:

  • The core functionality script

  • The banner display trigger script

1: Add Core Functionality Script

First, we need to add a script to support the basic functionality that the preference center is going to provide to support any choices that your users may make when they interact with your preference centre pop-up. Without this, the preference center will not work. Insert this script at the very beginning of the section of your website's HTML code.

2: Adding Banner Trigger Script

By following these instructions, you will be able to display the preference centre pop-up on specific trigger (e.g. when a user clicks on a link or button on the website). We have provided an example for you to understand the configuration better.

  • Select the code and copy it.

  • Navigate to the section of your website where you want the banner to be displayed. Find the appropriate location and paste the copied embed code there.

  • After adding the code, you might want to preview it on your website to confirm its appearance and functionality.

Once you're satisfied with how the banner looks and operates on your website, return to the domain configuration tool. To complete the setup, click on the "Save and Close" button. This action finalizes your choices and ensures your domain is configured with the chosen banner.

Saving Domain Configuration

After completing all four steps of the domain configuration process, you will see the confirmation dialog "Do you want to save this domain?".

  • Click Okay to confirm and save your configuration

  • A success message will appear at the top-right corner with a green checkmark

  • The message will confirm "Domain saved"

  • Your domain will now be listed in the domains table
